Photography Job description: A photographer produces images that communicate a specific message to the viewer. There is no such thing as a general 'photographer'; most professional photographers specialise in one area, e.g. fine art, fashion, advertising, editorial or social photography. Around half of all professional photographers are self-employed; the remainder work for a wide range of employers, including creative businesses, publishers, photography agencies, or in the education or public sector.
What it involves:
  • seeking out appropriate photographic subjects and opportunities;
  • carrying out research and preparation for a shoot;
  • working in different locations, and in different circumstances, to get the right image;
  • using an extensive range of technical equipment, including cameras, lenses, lighting and IT software;
  • communicating with their subjects: putting them at ease, encouraging them and directing them;
  • arranging still life objects, products, scenes, props and backgrounds;
Qualifications needed: It is possible to become a press photographer without a degree/HND or foundation degree and with no formal qualifications in photography. However, if you are undecided as to your direction, taking a course will give you the chance to develop your own creative style while exploring different aspects of photography.

Sources of information: A fashion photographer takes photos of the latest clothes, accessories, hairstyles and make-up. Fashion photography is seen as one of the most glamorous areas of photography and is undoubtedly one of the most competitive. Exotic locations, foreign travel, and the chance to mingle with celebrity culture are important parts of its appeal, although the role also involves working long hours, often in uncomfortable conditions.
